Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way businesses operate. With the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs) like OpenAI's GPT, developers now have access to powerful tools for building conversational AI applications. LangChain is a framework designed to make it easier to harness these models for real-world use cases by chaining prompts, memory, and external data sources.
In this blog post, I’ll briefly explain LangChain and provide a step-by-step guide to creating a real-world customer support chatbot using Python.
What is LangChain?
LangChain simplifies the process of developing LLM-powered applications by offering reusable components for:
Prompt Engineering: Craft structured instructions for LLMs.
Memory: Maintain conversational context across multiple interactions.
Agents and Tools: Allow LLMs to call APIs or interact with external systems.
Data Integration: Connect to structured/unstructured data sources for intelligent responses.
Real-Life Use Case: Automating Customer Support with LangChain
Below steps will lead to a Q&A chatbot that responds to customer queries about an online retail store. This bot will understand natural language questions and provide accurate, friendly responses.
1. Install LangChain and Dependencies
pip install langchain openai flask
2. Set Up API Credentials
You need an OpenAI API key. Set it as an environment variable or store it securely in your project:

3. Build the LangChain Application
3.1. Import Required Libraries
from langchain import OpenAI, LLMChain
from langchain.prompts import PromptTemplate
3.2. Define a Prompt Template
A prompt instructs the model to act as a customer support assistant:

3.3. Create the LangChain Model

The temperature parameter controls the randomness of responses from the LLM. Lower values (e.g., 0.2) make the output more deterministic, while higher values (e.g., 0.9) increase creativity and variety.
3.4. Query the Model
Test the chatbot with a sample query:

response = llm_chain.run(query)

4. Enhance the Chatbot with Memory
LangChain's ConversationBufferMemory allows the chatbot to retain conversational context across multiple user interactions:

Memory type 'ConversationBufferMemory' stores all interactions between the user and the assistant. While it's simple to use, for production systems with storage requirements, more advanced memory types like RedisMemory or VectorStoreMemory are recommended.
5. Deploy the Solution
You can deploy the chatbot as a web API using Flask:
