Nosferatu (2024) features an ensemble cast including Nicholas Hoult, Bill Skarsgård, Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe and few more fantastic actors in a reimagining of the 1922 German silent Expressionist classic. Helmed by Robert Eggers, a modern eerie visionary and macabre storyteller, this marks his fourth directorial venture. Eggers, known for his ability to fuse folklore with horror and mystery within meticulously crafted authentic historic settings, has built an unparalleled reputation in just a decade. If you haven’t seen his top works (The VVitch, The Lighthouse), you’re missing essential benchmarks of modern dark cinema backdropped in the historic era.

The Nosferatu tale traces its origins to Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic novel, Dracula, a cornerstone of English literature and cinema, immortalized by wonderful adaptations from Tod Browning in 1931 and Francis Ford Coppola in 1992. Eggers’ adaptation reclaims the legacy of the unauthorized and unofficial 1922 German version, which transposed the British Lord Dracula into the sinister Count Orlok amidst German locales. That creative liberty sparked controversies then including accusations of antisemitism, leading to legal orders to destroy all copies. Despite this, Nosferatu endured, evolving into a cult phenomenon that profoundly influenced many over a century including Robert Eggers whose early days influenced him to an extent that all of his work reflects a dark and gothic aesthetic.

His version of Nosferatu took almost a decade to make and the final product is an immensely gripping, authentic, creepy and chilling depiction of an Evil Lord which aligns to the original premise of the movie.

I am not diving into the plot details to allow the viewers to fully enjoy this Gothic Tale unfolds its mystery, horror and suffering itself.

Merits:

  • Cult and historic premise

  • Hauntingly picturesque gothic settings

  • Impeccable production and costume designs (some reviewers indicated it reminded them about Lily's dad's Johnny Depp immensely popular & engaging Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow because of setting)

  • Stellar performances which include amazing, creepy, menacing and horrific portrayal of Count Orlok(German counterpart of Count Dracula).

Demerit:
Lily-Rose Depp delivers a commendable performance but perhaps the original choice Anya Taylor Joy(who became a star after Eggers' first flick and immensely popular The VVitch) would have lifted the movie higher since her personality and skills match well to the premise. This isn’t a demerit but a tantalizing “what if.” Nevertheless the entire cast performed really well, especially Nicholas Hoult and Simon McBurney(Knock, Count Orlok's eerie aide).

Obvious special mention is for Count Orlok, played by Bill SkarsgĂĄrd(brother of Tarzan: Alexander SkarsgĂĄrd who also played the arrogant yet amusing villain of John Wick 4: Marquis). His transformation will obviously not let you recognize him but certainly he is utterly & genuinely scary yet fascinating even where his presence just lingers in the background or voice overs and virtually every scene of him uplifts the movie and makes a chilling impact.

Cinematography is by Egger's regular Jarin Blaschke who photographed all his previous films and again did really well by capturing the world which Eggers envisioned and Nosferatu's old & rich history demands.

Conclusively, Nosferatu (2024) is another feather on the cap of Eggers that breathes new life into Gothic horror, deserving your time and full immersion. Prepare for a journey into darkness, suffering, and the enduring legacy of a story that refuses to fade.

Enjoy the nightmare!!!
